Domain Service FAQ

Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about the roll out of new ccTLDs at OpenSRS. If you have additional questions not answered here, you can always ask a question in our forums or contact our support staff, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

New ccTLDs

New ccTLDs

I don't see the new ccTLDs when I search in the Reseller Web Interface (RWI) or in OpenSRS Control Panel. Do I need to enable something?

We don't automatically search across all these new ccTLDs by default in either the RWI or the Control Panel. This is to ensure that search in the RWI and Control Panel is still quick. You can choose which ccTLDs to include when searching in the "Settings" section accessible from the link in the RWI domain search section (shown below).

What are some of the differences between these ccTLDs and gTLDs?

Many of the ccTLDs added are not synchronous. That is, there is a delay between when a request is made to OpenSRS and when the request is actually completed with the registry in question. That delay can range from second, to days depending on the registry. Some registries are entirely manual, while others use automated systems.

These new ccTLDs also work differently from a renewals perspective. In OpenSRS, it is assumed that a domain is not wanted if it isn't explicitly renewed prior to expire. In other words, domains in OpenSRS are set to auto-expire unless renewed.

These new ccTLDs operate in the opposite fashion. It is assumed the domain is wanted, unless the domain is specifically set to expire. Many of the extensions can only be renewed at specific times during the life of the domain, and so these domains are set, by default, to renew unless you specifically indicate that the domain is to be allowed to expire. Consult the documentation for more information.

Why are some of these domains so expensive?

It is true that some of these new extensions are considerably more expensive to register than TLDs like .com or .net, and many of our current ccTLDs. The costs for ccTLDs are set by the various registries and are often quite high and there are currency conversion issues to deal with. Another part of cost equation is the amount of manual processing involved. In some cases direct intervention by a human is required to process certain ccTLDs and that cost is reflected in the cost to consumers of these domains.

Are there residency or other requirements for these ccTLDs?

In many cases yes. Consult this reference chart for specific requirements of each ccTLD including residency or other restrictions.

Where can I register and manage these new ccTLDs?

New ccTLDs are available via the Reseller Web Interface (RWI), the Domain Manager in OpenSRS Control Panel, and via the OpenSRS API. End-users can manage domains through the Manage Web Interface (MWI). The new ccTLDs have not been added to Storefront at this time.
