.UK

Nominet maintains the authoritative primary name server for the co.uk, me.uk, org.uk, net.uk, plc.uk and ltd.uk zones. This ccTLD (country-code top-level domain) began in the 1980s with a voluntary group handling the administration. In 1996 as demand for company domains rose, Nominet was created as a private, not-for-profit registry operator. Since that time Nominet has demonstrated their Internet leadership by publishing their mandate and by providing extensive reports such as their Domain Name Industry Reports and Registrant surveys. Nominet is also helping you promote renewals with their dedicated site called Keep your .UK.

Nominet sponsors a Best Practice Challenge, which is designed to recognize British organizations, groups, or people who work to make the Internet a more secure, open and diverse place. Some of the websites recognized are being used in training seniors to use computers, raising Internet standards, and protecting children online. Even the renowned British Library is using .UK. Some of the most famous businesses in the United Kingdom use this domain extension, too, from banks to boots.

.UK Quick Facts

  • There are 7.5 million .UK domain names under management.
  • Nominet is the registry operator.
  • .UK is the third largest ccTLD with 13.6% of the market share.
  • Renewal rates of .uk domains were approximately 70% in the previous 12 months.
  • Domains older than two years have a higher rate of renewal.

The Registries: .COM

Editor’s note: OpenSRS offers 25 different top-level domains (TLDs) for our resellers. This is the fourth post in a series intended to share information about the wide range of TLDs and to introduce you to some of the available resources that the various Registries provide.

.COM logoOur history as a Registrar is connected to the rise of .COM. This TLD was one of the first available beginning in 1985. A decade later, Network Solutions, the registry operator at the time, started charging for it just as the Internet exploded. We are very proud of our legacy as one of the first registrars to competitively sell .COM; in January 2000, we sold our very first .COM domain, which was slashhosting.com (now parked). Since that time, we have grown to be the third largest registrar in the world and .COM remains the largest, most recognized TLD.

As a global TLD, you will find .COM sold in every corner of the world and for every use. It was initially started as a “company domain”, but you will find that its popularity knows no boundaries. Here are some unique examples: charities, Geek sites, sports talent, travel, gardening, large businesses and small businesses.

.COM Quick Facts:

  • 92.4 million combined .COM and .NET domains worldwide.*
  • VeriSign is the registry operator.
  • Established in January 1985
  • .COM is used for: global presence and recognition, email, websites, etc. as the primary online brand identity.
  • 99% of US-based Fortune 500 companies use .COM as their primary global online identity; 69% of the Global Top 2000 use .COM.
  • Since Q3 2007, .COM has maintained a resolution rate of 89%: the number and percentage of registered .COM domains that are resolving (working or “in use”) since this implies that someone is selling value-added services: hosting packages, email, digital certificates, shopping carts, etc.
  • 71% renewal rate – first-time renewals are key; when someone renews once, they are more likely to renew the domain name again – and require the necessary value-added services.
  • Provides support for IDNs and IPv6

Editor’s note: OpenSRS offers 25 different top-level domains (TLDs) for our resellers. This is the third post in a series intended to share information about the wide range of TLDs and to introduce you to some of the available resources that the various Registries provide.

.US logoAs a ccTLD (country code top level domain), .US brands itself as “America’s Internet Address.” It has existed since 1985 and was originally used primarily by governmental organizations and libraries. In 2002, it was made available to the general public. Any US citizen or resident, as well as any business or organization, including federal, state, and local government with a presence in the United States can register a .US domain name. Neustar is the registry operator for a number of TLDs including .US. We will be doing separate posts for each one.

Uses range from personal email addresses to government organizations to American businesses. One of the unique examples is for the Neustar-driven approval for children’s web content. This is a designation for websites appropriate for kids under 13 such as nick.kids.us (games for kids from the Nickelodeon television network) or americaslibrary.kids.us (presented by the US Library of Congress). The community site WeAre.Us has an innovative and helpful domain focusing on the “us” factor. Many businesses also find their Internet home in a .US domain name including social media/public relations site bub.blicio.us or cabinetmakers CampbellDesign.us or technology firm Bose at Bose.us. Zipcodes are also popular. These pages are parked, but are still valuable Internet real estate: www.20166.us or www.90210.us.

Neustar launched a social media marketing program in January 2009 to increase .US brand recognition. This includes a banner ad campaign that has generated clickthrough rates up to seven times the industry average. They also created a Facebook application for .US. They provide businesses and personal .US users with social media news and other great resources.

.US Quick Facts

  • There are 1.4 million .US domain names under management.
  • Neustar is the registry operator.
  • Most of the .US domains (87%) are registered and used in the United States, followed by Canada and then Europe.
  • .US purchasers are predominately male (84%) between the ages of 35 – 64 years old and use the domain for both business and personal reasons.
