Pi Day 2009

Pi Poster

It’s a tradition here at Tucows/OpenSRS to celebrate Pi Day, which falls on March 14 each year. Ok, stop. Think about that. Got it? Now I’ll go on. It also happens to be Albert Einstein’s birthday.

Pi Day has been celebrated by math enthusiasts and other geeks all over the world since 1988. According to Wikipedia, it was celebrated that year at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, with staff and visitors marching around in a circle and then consuming various round baked goods.

Unfortunately for us, this year Pi Day falls on a Saturday.  Either we could celebrate a day early or we’d have to march around in a circle in our own homes and consume our pies with smaller groups of friends or family.

We voted for celebrating early (which I guess makes it a 3.13 party). You can see a few pics of our, er, pi here, here, and here.

If you missed the link above, make sure you check out the Exploratorium’s page for Pi Day, which has all kinds of information and activities, including, yikes, “Pi-Ku” (Pi-inspired haiku).

Here are some other cool links:

The image to the right is available as a 24″x36″ poster from Unihedron which actually contains 350,390 digits of pi when magnified. Amazing.

Traditionalists will also call for the pi to be eaten on 3 14 at (approximately) 1:59:26.
