Meet Paul Karkas, Compliance Manager

Paul has been with Tucows/OpenSRS since 2001 and has watched the Compliance department’s responsibilities grow and change. Though he has many areas of responsibility, he sat down with me recently to talk about one important part of his job that our resellers might not know enough about.
We’ve written before about some of the restrictive practices of registrars like GoDaddy and Network Solutions. Briefly, if a registrant makes any change to the administrative email contact for a domain, GoDaddy will “lock” it for 60 days. If this occurs less than 60 days before a domain is due for renewal, it essentially prevents the customer from transferring the domain to another registrar and forces them to renew for another year with GoDaddy.
Back in September, James Koole posted a detailed guide to helping customers transfer their domains away from GoDaddy, but what if this information has come too late? What if your customer’s domain is locked and they are “stuck” with GoDaddy for another year?
At Network Solutions, things aren’t much better. Attempting to transfer a domain away after making an administrative change leads to a series of cryptic daily emails denying the transfer due to “potentially suspicious activity.” What can the average person do when faced with this sort of obfuscation?
Enter our Compliance department. Paul can help you deal with these situations and has lots of experience “breaking” these locks, allowing customers to freely transfer their domains to your OpenSRS Reseller account.
If you’re experiencing these kinds of issues with your end users, please contact Paul at complianceATopensrsDOTorg.
